During 2022, UGC had abolished the M.Phil. programs in India, in accordance with the recommendations of the National Education Policy 2020 - NEP 2020. The Section 14 of the UGC gazetted notification, "University Grants Commission (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of Ph.D. Degree) Regulations, 2022", dated 7th November, 2022, stated that "Grant of M.Phil. Degree.- Higher Educational Institutions shall not offer the M.Phil.(Master of Philosophy) programme".
However, through a Notice dated 13th August 2024, UGC has extended that validity of M.Phil. in Rehabilitation Psychology until academic year 2025-26 for admissions, in partial relaxation of the above cited Regulations. UGC has taken this decision in view of "the vital role played by the rehabilitation psychology in delivering mental health services".
Accordingly, interested aspirants may take admissions to M.Phil. in Rehabilitation Psychology programs in higher educational institutions (HEIs) until (and including) academic year 2025-26.
Beyond academic year 2025-26, all M.Phil. programs stand abolished in all higher educational institutions in India, as per the gazetted notification of UGC.
